  • History 1700 is a survey of American history and civilization from the colonial period to the present with emphasis on social, political, and economic developments. The course is concerned with the social history of the American people, not simply the activities of political elites or the wealthy and powerful. The emphasis on social or cultural growth means we shall be dealing with such themes as race, class and gender, as well as the traditional political history of the country.
